How do I cook wild rice so it’s tender but not mushy?

Properly cooking wild rice

Wild rice is actually a grass seed and needs longer cooking. Rinse briefly, then use about 1 cup wild rice to 3 cups water or broth. Bring to a boil, reduce to a simmer, and cook uncovered for 40–50 minutes until kernels split open and are tender but chewy.

  • Use 1:3 ratio
  • Simmer 40–50 minutes
  • Drain any excess liquid

For firmer kernels, reduce cooking time slightly. Combine with white rice for quicker cooking and more tender results in mixed dishes.
