What can I do when my rice turns out mushy or gummy?

Fixing mushy rice and avoiding it next time

If rice is mushy, spread it on a baking sheet and bake at low heat (300°F/150°C) for a few minutes to dry it slightly, or sauté gently in a skillet to separate grains. For future batches:

  • Use less water next time
  • Rinse rice to remove excess starch
  • Use high heat to bring to boil, then low simmer

Also try using a little oil when cooking and fluff with a fork after resting. Choosing the right rice-to-water ratio and avoiding lifting the lid while cooking prevents gummy results.
